Bitter Sweet Images...
Swell

A cold rain is falling
wooden furniture will swell and split
cushions absorb and stain
that old stereo will never play again
all those books will fall apart.

There’s no turning back now
a cold rain is falling
on all the things of yours we tossed
if you were alive you’d be so cross
you would have died.

All those things from your home
piled in a massive rusting bin
your worldly things all those dreams
soon hauled away just like you
in a few more days.

Too Soon

Writing an eulogy
for an unexpected death
is inconvenient.

When the first one to go
is not the first one in line,
it’s not how I planned to write it.

You, who left too soon.
And what about all those
bulbs my son planted for you?

How will I know
when those blooms
are opening for you?

You were making plans.
You’d fix up the yard
once you had more time.

You finally started planning again.
You would do things after dad died first
and eventually you would follow.

You talked about taking a train sometime soon.
No longer house bound,
you’d go from there to somewhere.

Now you are gone.
Mom, you stepped out of line too soon.
My view is blackened without your bloom.

Words alone will not do.
How to express
55 years of loving you?
