Night Lights

In the early night
When the crowns of trees
Nearly blend with the darkening sky
Lightening bugs begin their signaling
As I pick up and put away
Things that defined this day
Tools for planting, saws for trimming trees
A mower and a glass of melted ice
Dish soap, a sponge and a bucket to wash the cars
All the while the lights continue blinking
Signaling it is time to stop and stand in the yard
And seek a message from their
Wondrous intermitten luminosity

Insects the size of my finger nails
Sailing above fresh cut grass
Drifting between me and the stars
Flying over two clean cars
And I have translated their message
Pausing again to thank them
For creating light
Which no one can control
