Title: "Gregorio VII". 2009

This image was shot at twilight just before we had dinner in Rome. The only area readily seen on the original image file is the left edge which was illuminated by street lights and auto traffic. The view in front of the white column was in very low light and the right edge was mostly dark. I didn't use a flash to make this image as that would have changed what I hoped to create. I used imaging software to bring areas out of the dark and to exaggerate the graininess that occurs in low light photography. (The "purist" photographer might cringe at the post-camera manipulation that occurred to make this "photograph").
This image has a weathered feel that reminds me of the ads that are posted on flat surfaces all over Rome. I am attracted to the visual shifts that occur in this image (light to dark, contemporary to ancient, fully clothed to semi-dressed, etc.). Of course, I like the name on that column and is why my wife told me to, "Take a picture.".
